The six managers who made it onto this ranking smashed their benchmark’s performance and are miles ahead of their peers over three years.

We kick off with Citywire AA-rated Yu Zhang from Matthews Asia. Zhang has been with the San Francisco-based investment specialist for nearly 14 years and has been running its Asia ex-Japan fund since its inception in 2015.

The fund invests most of its assets in China and Hong Kong (52.4%). His top sectors include 18.7% in information technology, 17.1% in consumer discretionary, 15.7% in communication services and 13.4% in industrials.

Ezra Sun, Veritas Asset Management’s head of Asia and a Citywire AAA-rated manager, is a 16-year company veteran and has 47% of his fund invested in China, followed by 16% in Australia.

His Asian fund also has strong allocations to consumer cyclical (22.9%), healthcare (21.8%), technology (15.1%) and communication services (12%) stocks.

With more than 50% of the portfolio invested in China, the fund’s top holdings include internet provider SEA Limited (7.8%), online retail giant Alibaba (7.2%) and Chinese retailer JD.Com (4.9%).

Snagging the runner-up spot is Citywire-AAA manager Phil Sang Lee from Mirae Asset Global Investments. He has spent the 13 years at Mirae and is currently the firm’s head of Asia Pacific equity research.

His Asia growth fund is focused mostly on information technology (27.4%), followed by allocations to consumer discretionary (16%), financials (13.3%) and communication services (11%).

Topping our final manager ranking of the year is Citywire AAA-rated manager Kristian Heugh, a 19-year company veteran of Morgan Stanley Investment Management and head of the group’s global opportunity team. His China-dominant strategy boasts an eye-watering 72.8% return over the past three years and is focused mostly on consumer discretionary (36.5%) with other double-digit holdings in consumer staples (17.2%), financials (16.8%) and communication services (12.2%).
