David Gutierrez caught up with fund selector Ashley Mac Gregor between flights at Montevideo airport to learn about her start in the world of private banking.
Company: Credicorp Capital
Location: Santiago, Chile
What was your first ever job?
My first professional job is the one I’m currently in. I have worked as an investment analyst in the investment products team at Credicorp Capital since early 2016, where I am involved in fund selection for Credicorp Capital Chile Private Banking.
Why did you choose a career in finance?
I have a love for numbers and hard sciences, which is why I studied industrial engineering. When I was searching for a job to apply my skills, I found the financial world was an option that combined understanding the current situation with quantitative knowledge – the perfect match for me.
If you weren’t working in finance, what would you be doing?
Definitely something to do with numbers. Given my background maybe I could have worked for a retail or industrial company in any area involving processes.
What was your best investment decision?
Last year, our best investment decision was to invest in emerging market equity funds, such as the Schroders Asian Opportunities fund. It has achieved a performance of around 45% year-to-date and is well above its reference index, which has made both us and our clients very happy.
And your worst?
In 2016, with high market volatility and unexpected political results such as Brexit and the Trump election, we were positioned in some structured products whose expiration dates did not play well for us. I will never forget when a structured product that had an underlying European asset expired on the exact same day as the Brexit result.
What is the worst fund manager meeting you’ve ever had?
I have been very lucky – I have only had good ones! For me, the best meetings are the ones where managers bring new ideas and strategies for us to include in our portfolios.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Back to the Future. It is a very well thought-out movie in which specific details are included that can only be discovered after watching it five times. I love it!
What are you passionate about outside of work?
I love films, so going to the movies is one of my favorite activities outside of work. Sports are also a big part of my life.
What is your favorite spot in Santiago?
Santiago offers a huge variety of things to do. For instance, I love having lunch at El Mestizo restaurant, which not only serves delicious dishes but is also located just in front of a beautiful park, Parque Bicentenario, where you can go for a stroll after lunch. Another activity that most people love is going for a hike in the many hills near Santiago, such as Cerro San Cristóbal. Once you get to the top, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city.
